New Employees Summer 2017
Nahom Negash
Hello guys, my name is Nahom Negash. I was born and raised in
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. I have 5 brothers and 4 sisters. you are probably
thinking that's a lot, but for me having a big family has been really fun. We
do a lot of things together like playing sports, watching football, and working
side by side too. I have been living in the U.S. for about 6 months now. I
started attending Montgomery College in the spring semester of 2017. I have
been enjoying myself here. The students are fun to hang out and work with. The
other thing that I love about this campus is the diversity of students. I have
had a chance to meet a lot of people from so many different countries. They all
have a different experience, so I have a chance to learn many things from them.
I am a computer science student. I like programming because creating new things
makes me so excited. My favorite sport is soccer; we have been playing it as a
family since I was a kid, and I used to play as a striker on my high school
team. I have always wanted to go to the University of Maryland. I hope I get to
transfer after two years. Finally, I want to thank my family for supporting me
and giving me opportunities to be a better man.
Katelynn M.
Hey guys, my name is Katelynn M. and I am a rising
junior at Paint Branch High School, located in Burtonsville, Maryland. I
am here at Montgomery College’s Writing, Reading and Language Center as an
intern for summer R.I.S.E. I am an AP and honors student with the desire of
attending Oral Roberts University to study Journalism and Praise and Worship as
my majors and Political Science as my minor. I was born in Washington, DC;
however, I was raised in Maryland my entire life. I am the oldest out of three
children. I have a 10-year old brother and 5-year old sister. We are all
exactly five years and two months apart. I have four pets as well. A dog, two
cats and a turtle. I am a huge animal lover.
When it comes to doing what I love, I am very passionate.
Writing is one of those things that I love and I am very passionate about. I
knew I loved and had a passion for writing when I was in the fifth grade. It
was a safe space, for me to speak my mind, talk about the society we live in
without having to be concerned about others people's feelings or thoughts. I
have taken journalism classes in the past and I am continuing my courses in
Advance Journalism this upcoming school year.
I am very open-minded and enjoy learning about other people’s
cultures and I am eager to travel the world with my friends and other people I
love. I'm interested in learning the Chinese, Japanese, and French culture much
more. I’d love to travel to France, Italy, Egypt, Barbados and Spain just to
name a few. I love dancing. I dance at my church and in my free time. I can
sing, something all my friends think I should pursue a career in. I can draw
cartoon characters, I sketch and do tattoo art for my friends. I am in love
with my natural hair. My hair is like my baby.
I am in a serious relationship with Jesus Christ. I say
relationship because Jesus didn’t die on the cross for a religion. He died on
the cross for a relationship. He didn’t die on the cross to save a religion,
but he died on the cross to save us. Without God I am nothing.
Other than that I really enjoy my life and who I am! I hope
to gain tools that I can use in the workforce and further enhance my resume.
End of the Year Party- Spring 2017
The End of the Year Party, usually a farewell held every
year by the WRLC staff, was held on Monday, May 15, 2017. At the party, student

Afanyiakossou, one of the student workers graduated with AA in General Studies.
Ragda Noah transferred to the University of Maryland Baltimore County to pursue
a degree in Graphic Design and Web Design. Aman Tsegu transferred to the
University of Maryland College Park to study Nutrition. Deksiyos Demissie also
transferred to the University of Maryland College Park but to major in
Accounting and Information Systems. Alfred Yau, another student worker
transferred to the University of Maryland College Park to study Accounting.
Lauren Tenorio, a peer tutor at the Center, also transferred to the University
of Maryland College Park to pursue a degree in Political Science. Some people
brought food to the party. Meyevi brought ablo (Togolese food), kebabs,
spinach, and salad. Phuong brought spring rolls (Vietnamese food). Nhu brought
Thai iced tea. Ms. Adrienne, a staff member, brought pizza. Mr. Hiro, Ms.
Tanya’s husband, made Konomiyaki (Japanese pancake). In addition, Manijeh made
a chicken cake and a chocolate cake especially for Mr. Fisher since that day
was his birthday. In brief, the WRLC staff, tutors, peer tutors, and student
workers had a nice picnic outside under a lovely weather.

Alfred Yau.
English Conversation Club Field Trip Spring 2017
The final English Conversation Club meeting
of the spring semester was held on April 21st , 2017. Students from
the Conversation Club organized an entertaining trip to the National Aquarium
located in the beautiful Inner
Harbor area of Baltimore. The National
Aquarium is organized to allow people to experience and learn about many
different habitats, such as, marine life, rainforest life, and much more.
During the visit, Conversation Club members got to see all different types of
animals as well as under the sea creatures, including, dolphins, sharks, sting
rays, and we even got to touch the jelly fish! In the rainforest we saw sloths,
monkeys, birds, turtles, frogs, and different types of snakes. After exploring
the aquarium, we enjoyed lunch sitting outside at Miss Shirley's Café enjoying
the yummy food as well as the beautiful view of the Inner Harbor. Everyone had
a great time, and it was definitely an amazing way to spend the last meeting of
the semester.

Please read about Phi Theta Kappa:
Membership in Phi Theta Kappa
provides many benefits. First and foremost, you will be eligible for
transfer scholarships that many colleges and universities offer to Phi Theta
Kappa members. Another benefit of membership is that you will be included
in Phi Theta Kappa’s scholarship and job placement database, which makes your
name available to senior institutions seeking scholarship recipients and major
companies seeking employees; this is done automatically for you when the
College submits the enclosed profile form. You will receive the Phi Theta
Kappa Transfer Directory, which includes a listing of all transfer scholarships
available exclusively to Phi Theta Kappa members, plus articles on financial
aid, transferring, and four year institutions. Finally, the national
reputation of Phi Theta Kappa will identify you to other colleges and potential
employers as a superior student, and should be included on your resume.

New Student Workers and Volunteers Spring 2017
Chenise Lyon
Hey guys, my name is
Chenise Lyon. I’m from Jamaica. I’ve
been living in the United States for the last 2 years. I do miss home but there
are many Jamaicans in the DMV area so I get a little piece of home now and then. I started attending Montgomery College in the
Spring of 2016. So far, I have been loving my experience here. My current major
is Nursing. However, my ultimate aim is to be obstetrician: that is, a doctor
who delivers babies. Why an obstetrician? Well, I find the process of child
birth very intriguing, for some reason, I can’t seem to understand. Therefore,
this is my way of getting hands-on experience in the process. To get there it
requires a lot of hard work. So I put a lot of efforts in my academic studies.
I could basically describe myself as a bookworm.
Even though I may put a lot of time
in my school work, I do find time to have fun. As they say, “All work and no
play make Jack a dull boy.” I love partying and you know it comes with a whole
lot of dancing. And that is what I love doing the most. I especially love
dancing to Jamaican music. It’s like when I hear our island beats I just can’t
seem to resist the urge of moving my waist line. I also love eating good food,
so I definitely had to master the art of cooking. In addition to this, I love
meeting new people from different cultures and this is one of the reasons I
love Montgomery college so much because of its diversity.
And most importantly, I am a God
fearing individual. Because without God I would be nothing.
Natenniel Kabore
Hello everyone, my name is Natenniel Kabore. I am from Burkina Faso. I am
living with my friends, and they are friendly. I came to the United States in
November 2015. This is my fourth semester. My major is finance. My dream is to
become a prestigious financial planner because I want to help people wisely
invest their money. My hobbies are watching African movies and playing guitar.
My favorite food is FUFU. I am very happy to work in WRLC because it is a good
place to easily and quickly learn English. The environment is also peaceful.
Thioro Sarr
My name is Thioro Sarr. I am
from Senegal. I am in my second semester in the Life Science program at
MontgomeryCollege. My personality is characterized by my background, interests,
achievements and goals. I was born in a small neighborhood in Dakar, the capital
of Senegal. I spent all my childhood in that beautiful and modest district.
Practicing taekwondo, playing basketball, and doing math are my pleasurable
pastimes. It can sound unusual; however, I like doing math, probably due to the
love that I have for Mathematics or it is just a matter of addiction to math. I
choose to become a doctor because I feel a great satisfaction of helping
people, mainly poor people who usually do not have easy access to health
treatment. Many of my realizations reinforce my confidence, and help me on
pursuing my dreams; for instance, being self-reliant, learning English, attending
college…Some of my goals are to finish university, to be the best in my domain
(medicine), and to establish a clinic whose main purpose is to serve poor
people.
Kim Nguyen
My name is Thuyen Thi Kim
Nguyen but my friends call me Kim because it is easier to pronounce. I am from
Vietnam. My family and I came to the United States in March 2015. My first
semester at Montgomery College was Fall 2015 and next semester, Fall 2017 will
be my last semester here and I am going to transfer to University of Maryland,
College Park. My major is Business and I hope I can get accepted in Accounting
major. I love watching TV shows and cooking. My major in Vietnam was law and I
really liked it. I know it is hard to study law in English because it is my
second language, and that is why I changed my major. I also love doing a math.
Mai Tran
Hi, everyone. My name is Mai. I am from Vietnam, and I came to the United
States two years ago after finishing high school. This is my second year
in MC. My major is life science. My long-term goal is becoming a
physician because I do not want people to suffer from illness, especially
the ones I love. In my free time, I spend time in the library or hang out
with my friends. My hobbies are watching movies and listening to music. I
usually stay up late to watch Korean movies and American TV shows such as The
Walking Dead, Grey’s anatomy, or Disney movies. I am not really a sports’ fan,
but swimming and jogging are my favorites. I like drinking coffee, and my
favorite foods are Korean and Japanese food. Working in Writing Reading Language
Center is a great opportunity for me to learn more and make more friends. Thank
you for your patience and for your help when I am working here.
Ruth Nicoue
My
name is Ruth Nicoue. I was born in Benin a country in West Africa. I am 21
years old, and my major is International Studies. I chose this major because I
am interested in everything related to foreign policies, and I have the ambition
to work one day in the United Nation(UN). I have had a passion for books since
my childhood because I am the only girl among boys in my family. I had to find
a way to entertain myself during my childhood, and reading books was my way to
escape the monotony of my life. I also love to write short stories because it
helps me create my own version of the world. I am ambitious, hardworking, and
obstinate, and the obstacles I have encountered in my life have not impacted my
vision of what my life should be. I changed my major twice: first I started
College in France where I was studying business; then I changed completely to
International Studies when I realized that if I want to be happy and feel fulfilled
I have to make some changes. It took me a year to finalize my project to come
to the United States, but I never gave up hope. I know the challenges that I had
to overcome to pursue my studies and dreams and that’s why I am determined to not
waste this amazing opportunity offered to me. Beyond the fact that I need to
succeed, I also want to make my parents proud because of the sacrifices they have
made to send me to the US. My last dream will be to help my country develop and
put into practice what I learned here.
New Student Workers 2016
Barnabas Afley
Hi everyone, my name is Barnabas Afley. I am from Ethiopia, but I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is my second year at Montgomery College and my first year working at the WRLC. My major is Life-Science, and I plan on becoming a Doctor. I am glad that I got this chance to work at the Writing Center with a great team.I live with my mom, dad and brother. I love spending time with them, because of our ethiopian culture family bonds are especially important. Due to this we make sure that we separate time each week to bond and appreciate each other like family dinners for example.
My favorite hobbies are surfing the web and playing basketball. I also enjoy watching movies. My favorite movie is Captain America. I love hanging out with friends and going to different places. Just being with the presence of my friends makes me happy.
Manizhe Bidhendi
My
name is Manizhe. I’m from Iran. I came to the U.S. about 4 years ago. I’ve been
a Montgomery College student since 2013. I was a volunteer in the WRL center
last fall, but now I work as a front desk student worker. WRL center has been a
good resource not only for improving my writing, reading and language for me,
but it also helped me to be familiar with the work environment in the U.S. for
the first time. I’m so happy to work with such wonderful colleagues and advisors.
I enjoy reading novels and psychology books. I also like hiking, biking and cooking. This fall I’ve started to continue my
education in the field of early child hood education because I want to be early
childhood professional. Kids are energetic, curious, and joyful. I really like to be with them and learn the
way they look the life while I help them in their social life.
Nhu Dang
My name is Nhu Dang. I was born and raised in Vietnam; my
family and I came to America in 2014. Like many people, I had a hard time adapting
myself to the new environment when I first came here. I really wanted to go
back to my home country, but luckily, I didn’t. But now, I really like living
here and feel that I’m very lucky to be here. As you know, I am Phuong’s
younger sister, but I don’t know why many people say that I’m older than her. I’m
majoring in accounting and planning to transfer to the University of Maryland.
I’ve always been interested in so many things that I don’t
have time to be good at any. I love arts, crafts, music, math, computer, and photography….
Also, I like cooking, both Vietnamese and American food, whenever I have time. But
honestly, I don’t think my family like the food I made, so I decided to cook just
for myself! I love working with children, so I participate in The Vietnamese
Eucharistic Youth Movement (VEYM), a youth group in Vietnamese Catholic Church,
as a youth leader. I enjoy playing with the kids and teaching them every
Sunday.
I’m currently working at the Writing and Reading Language
Center(WRLC) in Takoma Park Campus. I really like the job so far, and this is
the first job I’ve ever had. Although I haven’t met all the staff, tutors, and student
workers in WRLC yet, I really like my coworkers because they’re very helpful
and nice.
New English Peer Tutors
Nathaneal Vega
My
name is Nathanael Vega. I was born here in the United States, Maryland born and
raised (for the most part). I am an
English Peer Tutor. My hobbies include bike riding, hiking, playing video
games, weight lifting and writing. At the moment, I do not own a bike, but I
have always enjoyed riding them. I owned a few different ones at various points
of my younger years and spent several hours at a time riding around my
neighborhood. I did a lot more hiking when I was younger, but I do intend to
start again soon. I enjoy hiking because of how relaxing it is, on top of how
fun it can be. It also allows me to enjoy nature, and it is a great form of
exercise. I was weight lifting last year, but due to some complications, I had
to stop, but I plan on picking it up again soon. Gaming and writing are what I
mostly do nowadays. Playing video games is fun and convenient. Writing has
always been a passion of mine, and I am seeking a career as a fiction writer.
Emily Hynes
My name is Emily, and i’m a 26 year old international student from Perth, Western Australia! I have been studying at Montgomery College since Spring 2015, towards my AA General Studies. I was initially enrolled as a communication major, however, I decided fairly early on that my passion lay with writing and research. After my time at Montgomery College, I hope to pursue my BA in either literature or American Studies. My dream would be to attend a prestigious school such as University of California, NYU, or Brown to pursue my future studies.
I have just recently started to work with the writing centre as an English peer tutor. My hope, is that I can not only assist others with their English skills, but also vastly improve upon my own. I am also currently participating in the Renaissance Scholars Honors program, and the Paul Peck Humanities Internship, through which I will be interning during Fall 2016 at the Library of Congress.
Travel is a passion of mine, and I hope to travel to every continent over the course of my life. I particularly love travelling in the United States, especially on the West Coast. I enjoy live music events, trying new food (there’s very few cuisines I don’t enjoy!), cooking and entertaining; but, above all, I enjoy the company of new people, as well as my friends and boyfriend. I enjoy discussing and debating topics and learning about the perspectives of others, and about the way things work here in the United States!

2015-2016 Student Employees of the Year
The 12th Annual Student Employee of the Year Award Ceremony was held today, Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Germantown campus of Montgomery College. Student employees from each department from each campus are chosen to receive this award based on their reliability, quality of work, initiative, professionalism, and contribution to the workplace. The four students chosen from the WRL Center TP/SS are Selam Berhe, An Nguyen, Solomon Teklegiorgis, and Senait Zewdu. Read their bios here and see the fun they had at Germantown today!
Selam Berhe
Selam Berhe has distinguished himself by his competence,
courtesy, and positive attitude. In the
Computer Tutorial Language Center (CTLC) he is able to provide assistance to
students on a wide array of technical issues, including working with
Blackboard, using MS Office programs, and using the WEPA printer. In addition, he assists with programs
particular to the CTLC. As he works with
student and staff, he is invariably extremely courteous and diplomatic and
always has a cheerful demeanor. Because
of his facility with the software and procedures of the CTLC, he is often
called upon to teach new student workers.
The Writing, Reading, and Language (WRL) Center benefits immensely from
having someone with his technical abilities and interpersonal skills.
An Nguyen
An
(Anthony) Nguyen has shown remarkable initiative and gained a great deal of
technical facility in his role as Language Lab Assistant at the Writing,
Reading & Language (WRL) Center of Takoma Park/Silver Spring. In so doing, he has provided a valuable
service to the WRL Center. The Language
Lab Assistant is a new position at the Center, and Anthony was the first to
take it on. He did so with great gusto,
spending many hours mastering the software used in the lab. Ultimately, he not only became adept with
this software but also instructed a number of other student workers in the use
of these programs. In addition to being
enthusiastic in the Language Lab role, Anthony has been a model employee in a
number of other respects. He is
invariably punctual and reliable, is exceedingly diplomatic and courteous in
his dealings with staff and visitors, and is always eager to learn and happy to
share what he knows. It is a delight to
nominate him for Student Employee of the Year.
Solomon Teklegiorgis
Although Solomon Teklegiorgis is one of our newer Front Desk
Clerks, he has distinguished himself in this position by his reliability,
quality of work and attitude. He is
invariably punctual and always can be counted upon to do well whatever task he
has been assigned. He has mastered all
of the routine tasks of the front desks, and does them without errors. In addition, he is happy to take on extra
tasks when the opportunity arises.
Finally, he is invariably cheerful and courteous to staff and visitors
alike. Indeed, Solomon is a delight to
work with, and he is a real asset to the WRL Center.
Senait Zewdu
Senait Zewdu has
two roles at the WRL Center of Takoma Park/Silver Spring: Team Leader and Office Assistant. In each of these roles, she has distinguished
herself by her high standards, quiet competence, and positive attitude. Team Leader is a role given only to the most
outstanding student workers at the WRL Center – those who can serve as role
models, teach other students, and see what role needs filling at the moment and
fill it. Senait does all of these
admirably and without fuss. She is
always cheerful, always helpful, and always able. As an Office Assistant, what are called for
are integrity, reliability and attention to detail. Senait has exceeded expectations in this
regard, and quickly became one of the best student workers in this role. Senait is a shining example for the other
students, and she is a great asset to the WRL Center.
Employee of the Month
Senait Zewdu
Senait has been an employee here at the WRL Center for a
couple of years and has graduated to the role of Team Leader. She is always
pleasant and reliable, and she is diligent in finding work to do. New employees
appreciate her especially as she is a skilled and patient teacher who always
makes them feel welcome. She is now learning a new role at the WRL Center,
and will be helping Ms. Peggy in the office. In addition to being a great
student worker, she is a fabulous student who recently passed the TEAS test!
Way to go, Senait!
